Battle Fever J

I haven’t seen every episode but I found the full series and will watch them to write a more detailed review later. For now, I’m covering what I was able to watch before I found all the episodes.

What does the name mean?

bfj.jpg ………………………………………………

Battle Fever J (バトルフィーバーJ) doesn’t have a specific meaning. Instead, it’s just the name of the team. The J means Japan for the country they are fighting in.

The theme song

bgj.png………………………………………………

This song is better than JAKQ’s and it is very catchy. It’s bright and is more of a kid friendly song compared to the first two. In the opening, the Fevers are transformed and are doing action poses, saving people and doing their daily tasks as regular people. Near the end we get to see their mecha.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

How did they become Fevers?

This one had a brighter origin. It might have been due to how dark JAKQ was.

Evil ego-centrists known as Egos, are plotting to plunge the Earth into chaos. They send a monster(disguised as a woman) to kill members of the National Defense Agency. Three members are assassinated and General Kurama  sends four of his agents to investigate. They are told to look for a lady with a red umbrella and stop her from killing another member.

bfjj.png They follow a lady who matches the description and captures her. She(Diane) was actually trying to lure the suspect by pretending to be her. Mr. Foster(FBI) tells them what was going on and right after he leaves the fever base, he gets assassinated by the same assassin. It turns out that he was Diane’s father and she wants to seek revenge.

They are given Battle Suits to enhance their battle performance and are given their code names  Battle Japan, Battle France, Battle Cossack, Battle Kenya, and Miss America.

It’s Henshin time! So, how do they do it?

Similar to Goranger, they don’t have a device to transform with. They turn as they shout Battle Fever and that’s all they need to do.

Unlike the other Sentai series’, they have eyes instead of visors for their helmets. This is also one of the rare times we get to see an orange ranger. During this time, Toei and Marvel worked together sharing ideas and concepts. That is why we have Miss America who is based on Captain America. The rest of the members were a variant of this concept representing different countries(at the time).

What did their mecha look like?

This is the first Sentai to have a mecha. It doesn’t transform and doesn’t combine but it looks cool.

bfjjjj.png …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Their base is under water and they launch the Battle Shark(a flying battle ship) when fighting robots. Battle Shark is armed with a lot of missiles and also houses the Battle Fever Robo inside. When ready to fight, the ship splits apart and the mecha is launched. Battle Fever Robo uses several weapons. The most common ones are the Katana, battle axe, shield and javelins. The villains also have robots that looks just like the monster in that episode.

What about their weapons and their finishing attack?

battle-ar-bats ……………………………………….

They carried a weapon called the Command Bat(looks more like a baton) that transforms into their individual weapons.

Battle Japan used a spear, Battle France, used a rapier, Battle Cossack used sais,  Battle Kenya used a whip, and Miss America used throwing knives.

For their finisher, they combined the Command Bats to form the Penta Force cannon. They shoot a powerful blast that destroys or heavily wounds the monster.

What else is there to know?

While teaming up with Marvel for 3 years, Toei made their own version of Spiderman. In the show, they had a giant spacecraft that transformed into a robot. Due to it’s huge success, they decided to add the Battle Fever Robo in the show. Battle Fever J was once considered the first Super Sentai because of the robot while the first two were just Sentai. While some people still consider this the first, it is officially the third.

How was it overall?

For a while, I was only able to watch the first five episodes(episode five is when they first use their mecha). I liked it better than the first two because the pacing isn’t as slow. For being the first Sentai with a robot, I think it holds up pretty well. While I had a hard time watching a whole bunch of episodes(in one sitting) for the first two, I was able to be more invested.

JAKQ DENGEKITAI

(April 9, 1977 to December 24, 1977. 35 episodes)

Similarly to Goranger, it was really hard to find the episodes for JAKQ. In fact, I found less videos for this than I did for Goranger. I don’t know why it’s so hard to find but one day, I will buy the DVD’s for the older Sentai series’ and when that happens, I’ll go into more details about JAKQ. For now, it’ll just be videos I found on Youtube and episodes that were available.

What does the name mean?

jakq_title_card

.

The title ジャッカー電撃隊 translates to J.A.K.Q. Blitzkrieg(or Lightning Speed) Squad. While Goranger’s title had a 3D look to it, this one doesn’t. Instead, ジャッカー(Jakka) is designed to look like lightning bolts and the kanji 電撃隊, is squished together. I guess it was designed like that to represent the speed of lightning.

.

The theme song

jakka

The music and style of the song was similar to that of Goranger and was sung by the same singer. In this one, the main theme of the song was the four cards Spade, Diamond, Heart and Clubs. It was catchy but I think that the Goranger’s theme song was catchier. In the opening, the  are in their vehicles and drifting hard. I don’t know why they are drifting, but it interesting to watch. Then, they jump out of their vehicles and run, they transform and their flying fortress flies towards the screen. Throughout the opening, they show a bunch of playing cards.

How did they become JAKQ?

It was interesting and once again, a bit more mature compared to PR.

Commander Joker assembles four test subjects to become cyborgs who has the power to fight CRIME. Ace refuses and later joins the team. Jack was framed and was about to go to prison so he joined to avoid that. Queen got into an accident that was caused by CRIME and her father dies, so she joins to seek revenge. King‘s body was cryogenically sustained for medical research after an accident inside a submarine and Joker, felt that reviving him by turning him into a cyborg was the right thing to do.

The suits are much better looking than Goranger’s. If they never used this when they did, I’d say that this would still work now. After the huge success of the first one, they were able to use better/more materials to make the costumes. I collect playing cards, so I really like the helmet designs. While Goranger had suits that looked a bit baggy and a bit rough, these look closer to what we get now(perfect size and smooth). They do have a transformation sequence and for being the first time in Sentai, it was creative.

jakq-ar-capsuleThey enter the Strengthening Capsules and each member is enhanced with their specific powers. Ace is Atomic Energy, Jack is Electric Currents, Queen is Magnetic Power and King is Gravity. You might be thinking that this method seems a bit inconvenient. Well, it would be, but they made it more manageable.

What did their mecha look like?

jakq1.png

Like Goranger, they didn’t have a giant robot. They had a tank and a flying fortress. Their tank was a bit better designed and had a twin turret and a mechanical arm. The flying fortress had the capsules so they could transform on their way to battle. it’s still a little bit inconvenient but it’s mobile which makes it okay.

What about their weapons and their finishing attack?

jakq2……………………………………………….

Unlike Gorangers(except for Ao and Mido), they had weapons that actually looked like weapons. Ace used a bow, Jack used a sword, Queen used the Wind and Fire Wheel that is shaped like the letter Q and King used a Cestus that also became a ball and chain.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

jakq3.pngTheir finishing move is called the J.A.K.Q. Covack. This is an attack that combines all four of their Powers (Atomic Energy, Electric Currents, Magnetic Power and Gravity).

jakq4

They each had their own vehicles and that’s all I can say about these(lol).

Don’t forget about Big One

jakq-bigone ……………………………………………………………………………

I didn’t forget about him, but I also don’t know a whole lot about him either. I know that he was created because the show was too dark and kids  slowly stopped watching it. They need a character who is funny so they can make the show less dark. That character became Banba who transforms into BiOne. From what I saw, he is definitely much brighter and if he was in the show earlier, it might have saved the show. Even with him, JAKQ only lasted 35 episodes compared to Goranger’s 84. Thanks to Gokaiger, I was able to understand his abilities. BiOne has all four of JAKQ‘s powers and doesn’t need to use the capsule to transform. Banba is a master of disguise(he was once “Hitler”) so that’s probably how he transforms(kinda similar to Goranger).

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

jakq-ar-bigbomber ……………………………………………………………………..

…………………………………………………………………….

With BiOne, JAKQ uses a new finisher called the Big Bomber. It’s basically a cannon that is assembled and fired at the enemy.

How was it overall?

They got the costumes right, the concept was pretty unique and their reason for fighting was interesting. However, the show went down hill because it talked about drugs, gangs and other crime related subjects that were not suited for kids. Although I haven’t seen enough episodes, I was still able to tell why it didn’t last as long as the others. As an adult, it’s easier to watch it but I don’t think I would have liked it if I saw it at the target age.

HIMITSU SENTAI GORANGER(aka the first one)

(April 5, 1975 to March 26, 1977. 84 episodes)

I don’t know a lot about this one, but I do know that this is where it all began. Due to how difficult it is to find the episodes online, I only watched what I could gather. This will only cover what I’ve seen and my opinion on it. I’m also using some information from databases and Wiki to get an idea on what it’s about.

What does the name mean?

goranger

The title 秘密戦隊ゴレンジャー translates to Secret Squadron Five Rangers. I really like how colorful it is. I think this title works really well for being the first Sentai. I like the name Goranger because it’s really simple, kinda like Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. MMPR is simple because it’s really, just ‘Power Rangers’ and the Sentai is just ‘Five Rangers’.

I think that this title is the reason why all Sentai titles are 3D.

.

.

The theme song

aka

The opening theme is really catchy and I found myself singing along even though it’s an old song. In the opening, there are a lot of explosions and the rangers fight the foot soldiers. This aired on 1975 and the way they filmed the opening makes it easy to tell that it was made in the 70’s. It’s kinda hard to describe it but if you watch it, you’ll know what I mean.

.

.

So, how did they become Goranger?

It’s actually pretty interesting, kinda mature and I don’t think PR fans will ever see an origin story quite like this one.

.

A terrorist group called the Black Cross Army threatens the world and EAGLE(the Earth Guard League) is formed to combat the threat.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

omg Five operatives were sent to destroy each of the EAGLE branches of Japan. Only five Members survived the attack and they become the Gorangers. The attack involves explosives, brutal beatings, poison gas, the destruction of buildings, stabbing with a sword and shooting EAGLE members with a lot of bullets. I really liked this origin because they took the kids a bit more seriously.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

It’s Henshin time! So, how do they do it?

Interestingly, they don’t have a device to do so. They just spin once, get the suit and are ready for combat.

himitsu_sentai_goranger_gokai_changes_by_lyokoluis1-d60aubk

They look pretty funny now, but I’m sure for kids in the 70’s, this would have been really badass. Since the design grew on me, I think it looks pretty cool but most people find this a bit goofy looking. As you can tell by the way they were numbered, green is last and pink is fourth. I don’t know why they chose to number them this way, but eventually, they change their order to what we’re more familiar with(red blue green/black yellow pink/white). The characters(by color) each have the same, familiar, traits that we know. Red is the leader who wants to be there for them, Blue is second in command and is a bit stylish with his clothes, Green is usually the youngest or the less mature one who’s very curious, Yellow is really strong and stubborn, and Pink is the ‘girl’ of the group and is good with disguises. They use the Japanese words for their colors(Aka, Ao, KiMomoMido).

What did their mecha look like?

They didn’t have one that looks like a robot. Instead, they have two flying fortresses, a six wheeled tank with claws and a hot air balloon with claws.

vehicles

While I do like the flying fortresses, I always had a hard time getting used to the tank and especially, the balloon. they were a bit too silly looking. If I didn’t know that the later series’ will have giant robots, it might have been easier for me to get used to it, but seriously… what the heck are those things?

What about their weapons and their finishing attack?

Their weapons were pretty simple, but they were pretty useful.

weapons

Aka had a whip/rope that was used for both offensive and defensive attacks but it was also used to grab onto things. Ao had a bow and what I assumed was an unlimited amount of arrows. Ki had a mace with a metal fist on it, well, I think it was a fist. Momo had a mirror that reflects attacks and earrings that are cherry bombs. Mido had a boomerang that can cut anything(that’s what it looked like it can do). They got these weapons by removing their visors(duplicate it?) and these visors turned into their weapons.

weapons

Their finishers are called Goranger Storm and Goranger Hurricane. They passed/kicked the ball to each other and the last ranger to receive it, kicks the ball towards the enemy and the ball explodes. I think this is why all monsters in Sentai explode when they die.

go-ar-machines

They had motorcycles that were driven by Aka, Ao, and Mido while Ki and Momo, sat in the sidecars.

What else is there to know?

There’s a manga that was serialized before the live action version. I haven’t read it but I heard there isn’t much of a difference except for the style of art being more cartoon-like.

How was it overall?

While I couldn’t find all the episodes, the one’s I was able to watch were interesting. The story can feel a bit slow at times, but it’s kinda like watching the Thunderbirds, if you can wait during the slow parts, the part with all the action will always be there for you and those scenes are always fun.
